This is the first day of my life.

Interesting/Dangerous topic.

October 8th, 2009

Today was very focused on religion and debate over religion.

I literally had conversations about religion with two friends, my husband and my parents.

It’s such a strange topic to deal with because everyone’s thoughts are so personal, but it is just sooooo interesting to hear what people have to say. I’ve been told a million times that religion and politics are off-limits topics- but I don’t care.

Anyone have anything interesting to say on this topic?

PS: I myself, am an atheist- I am basically a nihilist- more specifically an existential nihilist.

So punk rock. lol.

I had to google “existential nihilist”

I believe I’m here for a reason, and that my life has meaning…But, identify more with Agnostic then anything else.

Well, it’s more that life has no greater meaning, IMO. I just think that I’m here by evolutionary chance and that’s it. After seeing “what the bleep?” I think I’m also a bit of a metaphysical nihilist, whereas- nothing is concrete at all. Anyways- I love the topic of religion/theology or lack there-of. Makes me happy.

I haven’t had the chance to read lately, funny that I check today..I too am sooo fascinated by religion (fun book I just finished on fanatical religion: Under the Banner of Heaven). Anyways, I always say I’m agnostic (Agnostic Creationism, to be more precise but nobody ever knows what that is).

kelsey – i like that! i’ve never heard of it (in fact i’ve had to google all of the fancy terms used in this post!) but i’d say they all seem pretty cool, and definitely more along the lines of what i believe that any particular religion.

organized religion is a bit hardcore for me, at least in this stage of my life. fundamentalist groups fascinate the hell out of me though. not in the sense that i want to join, but in the sense that i just don’t get it and want to know more. like what makes these people sooooo into what they believe/do. it’s pretty wild.

Caro- I totally agree. I am obsessed with learning more about the super fundamentalist groups. SO interesting. Even outside of religion. Groups that have seriousssss beliefs are so fun to learn about. History channel has been playing a bunch of stuff on the American Nazi party which is super interesting as well. Crazy people out there!
