Mama-milk for twins!?

November 14th, 2009

I’m gonna call La Leche League soon, because I want to prepare for what I’m in for as best I can.

But.

Any twin moms or friends of twin moms have any advice or stories to share regarding the breastfeeding of twins?! It’s something that I do realize will be hard and may not work out for me. But, my doctor is all but dismissing my questions with things like “It will be really hard” or “You’ll most likely have to supplement.” I figure- I KNOW it’s hard. I did it for 5+ months exclusively with Hudson and another month supplemented by formula.

But, I figure if there was ever MORE of a reason to breastfeed: little preemie-ish twins would be the reason.

Hints, tips & advice welcome!

So I have found you through Harper’s Happenings (I am a high school friend of Mandy’s) Just had to say your blog is enjoyable and your family is adorable!

I am a twin, and my mom exclusively breastfed us both for 6 months (she only stopped when I was nicknamed “jaws” for obvious reasons). Not sure HOW the heck she did it (I know how hard 5 1/2 months was for my ONE baby) but I am pretty sure she had a baby attached to a boob at all times… When we were newborns, I think she could feed both at the same time? She was super woman in my book- delivered us both naturally, drug free, at about 36 weeks, after 3 months of bedrest with a 3 yr old and a 6 yr old. And I was 7 lbs 11 oz, sister was 7 lbs (and also breech!).

Anyway, it is possible! Motherhood gives us some sorts of supernatural strength and abilities! Props for your efforts and I know the rewards will be worth it all!!

    Roxanne:
I am totally familiar with your blog. I had seen your blog courtesy of HH’s as well! :) Mandy is an inter-web mommy matchmaker! I have found sooo many of my favorite blogs through hers! I am so happy you stopped by!

Also: That’s so encouraging about your mom breastfeeding you and your twin. Are you fraternal twins? Identical? I am so fascinated with the whole twin thing and have a lot of questions! Are you and your twin wayyyyyy close like people say?

Well, I am totally much of a blogger lately, and really am trying! But yes, Mandy is a great web-mama match maker!

We are fraternal twins, definitely really close. Growing up, you always have someone there, its an incredible bond which any twin would tell you. We don’t quite read eachother’s minds, but its pretty darn close. We are very different, but also so much alike. My mom always made sure we were “separate” people, but we were and still are referred to as “the twins”. I feel so lucky to be a twin!

    Ask any questions!

Do you have a sister or brother?

We are having one of each which I am happy about only because my son is so young and I think with two of one sex he’d end up feeling left out being that there will only be 13 months separating them from eachother.

I was secretly hoping that they’d have a secret launguage and all those twin things you hear about.

I have a twin sister. OMG we totally had our own language when we were little, it drove my mom a bit nuts! A boy and girl will be an awesome combo!! I have an aunt and uncle that are twins and my MIL had a twin bro, and a close girlfriend of mine has a twin bro. They are all real close of course! And completely individual with stuff….

I’m not a twin mommy but I took an infant massage class with a mom who had just has identical twin boys and was breastfeeding both of them. She said the #1 trick was learning to feed them both at the same time (one tucked under each arm) so that you got a break. Because by the time you feed one & then the other it’s time to feed the first one again and you’ll never sleep ever ever again. She also did lots of pumping so her husband could help with every other feeding/night feedings. The last time I saw her she had made it to 4 months without any formula. I feel like I could TOTALLY feed twins with my own boobs but I’m a huge over producer.

Well, I did fine with my son and would still be breastfeeding if it wasn’t for my hyperemesis with my current pregnancy causing me to be on 4 different meds to stop barfing. So, I feel like I could do it- I’m just worried about never having a break- like you said! No sleep and no breaks would def not only be hard but be havoc on the milk supply.
