We have started potty training Hudson. He will be 15 months in just 6 days. I have read quite a bit of research that as diapers have become more convient the age of potty training goes up. Something like 80% of 18 month olds were potty trained as late as the 70′s. It may be a higher percent, actually. Now? 3 years & sometimes later because diapers are cheap and convenient. In the 50′s, you washed diapers by hand. My Grandma had 5 kids over 7 years. You can BET my mom, aunts & uncles were potty trained ASAP. I am working with Hudson and plan to make this happen, even if it takes me till he’s two. He will get this and I will rejoice in only changing the diapered asses of two children, instead of three.
Our plan is simple. We bought the “potty” and set it up. Hudson was immediately interested and wanted to play with it. We took off his diaper and let him sit there. He wasn’t so much into THAT idea. So, we put his clothes back on & went about our day. before bed we did the same. He sat there and did nothing. Then? Stood up and peed right NEXT to the potty. Radical. So, anyways- I’m not expecting miracles, but we are making an effort to take him with us everytime we go to the bathroom and basically narrating through what we are doing.
Before we go to the bathroom, like on our way to the room- we tell him we are going “potty” and then make the sign for potty. Hopefully, he will begin to associate telling someone he has to go and then actually going to the potty.
& this morning? I found him in the bathroom. While he isn’t naked or truly sitting on the toilet- he is totally working out what to do with it. Even if that’s climbing INTO it.

How exciting. I can’t wait to see how this plays out. I have a feeling he will get it early. He’s a smart kiddo.
I plan to start this process early with Milo as well. I really want him out of diapers by his second birthday but, we will just have to see how it goes.
Awhile back one of my co-workers kids (who was 5 yrs old) was still in diapers! They had to work with him really hard to get him out of diapers so he could start kindergarten!!!!!

Good for you! It’s funny how what’s now considered “early” potty training was once just potty training. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

We’re trying this with Sullivan – mind you we’ve been at it for 4 months, and he’s now 21months old. He’s still not telling us but I think that is more just being stubborn, as he knows what he is doing. He looked right at me the other day and said “pee” and touched his pants. We also bring him with us – partly so I can make sure he doesnt wack his sister in the head with a toy, and partly so he can try potty too. He even knows “mommy potty” “me potty”. What a kid!
Sounds like you guys have a pretty laid back plan like us, I figure if we introduce it and dont make it a huge high pressure thing, he’ll try it. Still no #2 on the potty though

Potty training can be a rough ride. I think it’s great that you’re starting young. I did the same. That didn’t make it go any faster though. Good luck!

Nice, and good luck! Johnathan was really into his potty from about 15-16 months and would often tell us he had to use it. He would pee and once or twice did a duece as well. Then, for whatever reason, he decided that he didn’t want to tell us before he went, and now takes a leak on the floor and proudly proclaims “pee pee!”. Not sure why he has decided he doesn’t want he potty any more. He still uses it sometimes but not like before.

Dan: freaking HILARIOUS use of the word Deuce. Cannot wait till Hudson can actually say that. Like, ‘mom- I gotta drop a deuce!’ I bet that will be the highlight of my parenting experience. He hasn’t actually GONE on the potty yet but last night he sat on it with his nakie butt for about 45 minutes playing with toys. And this morning too.
